Hartbeespoort Dam Ascent
The Hartbeespoort Dam Ascent uses the mountain roads climbing from the dam wall into the Magaliesberg range above — a demanding ride gaining significant elevation from the dam level (approximately 1,075m) up into the Magaliesberg peaks that rise 400m above the surrounding plains. The view from the upper sections — over the dam, the Magaliesberg curving east toward Johannesburg and the Bushveld plains extending north — is one of North West Province’s finest cycling viewpoints.
What to Expect
Mountain road and singletrack on advanced terrain with sustained climbing from the dam to the mountain rim. The Magaliesberg’s ancient quartzite rock creates a dramatic mountain environment. The descent rewards the effort substantially — long, technical mountain road descents with the dam panorama ahead throughout. Weekends bring tourist traffic on the dam roads — ride with full visibility and awareness.
