Klipriviersberg Red Route
The Klipriviersberg red route is the reserve’s most popular MTB circuit — a 15km loop that takes in the best viewpoints, the most interesting rocky koppie terrain and the Iron Age archaeological sites that make this reserve unique in the Johannesburg trail network. The red route begins with an immediate commitment to the koppie terrain, climbing from the entrance area onto the reserve’s central ridge on rocky singletrack.
The Red Route
From the entrance gate, the red route ascends the koppie terrain on loose shale singletrack — a sustained climb with the Johannesburg CBD skyline visible over the southern suburbs as altitude increases. The ridge traverse provides the route’s best views: clear days reveal the full city skyline from the north and the open Highveld plains stretching south toward Heidelberg. The descent from the ridge is equally technical — loose rocky surface, significant gradient and the need for controlled speed through the lower forest sections where the roots add additional challenge. Iron Age stone walling is visible alongside the upper trail sections — a reminder that this koppie landscape has been inhabited, grazed and valued by communities for many centuries before it became a city nature reserve.
