Situated in the ancient indigenous forest between Knysna and Plettenberg Bay inside the Garden Route National Park, the Harkerville Mountain Bike Trails offer four colour-coded routes through one of South Africa’s most biodiverse environments. The Red Route in particular — a 22km combination of deep forest singletrack and vertiginous coastal cliffs — is consistently rated among the most scenic MTB experiences in the country.

The Four Routes

🟡 Yellow Route (13km | Easy): Entirely on gravel forest service roads. The only route that stays open in wet conditions — the reliable all-weather option for the area.
🔵 Blue Route (11km | Easy–Intermediate): Adds singletrack winding through high forest, including a loop past majestic Coastal Redwood trees planted in 1927. Not technically demanding but adds genuine trail flavour.
🟢 Green Route (14km | Intermediate): Follows the Grooteilandpad and Waterpad — with a natural swimming hole midway — before a coastal loop with spectacular Harkerville coastline views. Return along Perdekoppad is pure singletrack through tall coastal forest.
🔴 Red Route (22km | Challenging | Allow 3-5 hours): The showstopper. Deep forest singletrack combined with a vertiginous coastal traverse along fynbos cliffs high above the Indian Ocean. Expect technical sections, significant climbing and an unforgettable experience.
