Skeerpoort Valley 20km

Van Gaalen is one of South Africa’s most celebrated MTB destinations — a trail network crossing more than 30 private farms with over 80km of purpose-built singletrack and gravel roads throughout the Skeerpoort Valley in the shadow of the Magaliesberg range. The trail head is at Van Gaalen Cheese Farm, a Dutch artisan cheese operation on Plot 260 Skeerpoort where the farm shop and deli provide excellent pre- and post-ride provisions. Day permits at R60 include mandatory indemnity forms available at the Trail/Farm Shop.

The 20km Route

The 20km intermediate loop explores the Skeerpoort River valley terrain — purpose-built singletrack through reeds, indigenous bush and open veld with river crossings of the Skeerpoort River. Getaway Magazine describes the trails as ‘one of the gnarliest rides in the Magaliesberg region’ — despite the intermediate classification, the varied terrain including rocky climbs and descents demands attention. The famous Pofadder route and the Greek Church climb are accessible on extended loops for more ambitious riders.

Practical Notes

Tyre sealant recommended — thorns and Magaliesberg rock are trail hazards. Trails are closed Monday and Tuesday. Eye protection is strongly advised — dust, insects and thorny branches on trail. The farm cheese shop and restaurant are excellent post-ride destinations.
