Taung Heritage Ride

Taung is one of the most scientifically significant places in Africa — the site where the Taung Child skull (Australopithecus africanus, 2.8 million years old) was discovered by Professor Raymond Dart in 1924, changing understanding of human evolution. The Taung Heritage Site is part of the UNESCO Cradle of Humankind listing and the dry limestone cave landscape where the fossil was found is a remarkable geological feature. The 20km Heritage Ride follows gravel roads through the semi-arid Kalahari-fringe landscape around the town on easy terrain.

What to Expect

Easy gravel roads on flat semi-arid terrain. The dry thornveld and limestone geology of the Taung area creates a distinctive arid riding environment. The heritage context — riding in the landscape where fossil evidence of our ancient ancestors was found — adds an extraordinary dimension to what is otherwise a straightforward gravel ride.
